This is an enjoyable little (40 min.) DVD of Johnny Cash performances, most from the late 1950's on a California TV show called "Town Hall Party." It's anything but a greatest-hits sampler, but provides a good sampling of his songs at the time. At one point, Cash gives an amusing comedic Elvis impersonation. His performances show the simplicity of country music at the time, before the era of overproduction, with the Tennessee Two providing backup and harmonies, accompanied by a small number of the show's musicians. I enjoyed watching Marshall Grant's "slap-bass" playing.

However, "Town Hall Party" appears to have been a low-budget TV show, and no attempt was made to restore the original recordings. The sound quality is bad and the visual quality is worse. This is primarily a show for Johnny Cash fans. We're warned on the DVD case, "THIS PRODUCTION IS NOT AUTHORIZED OR ENDORSED BY THE ESTATE OF JOHNNY CASH." No wonder.
