I cannot believe I have always passed this movie. I have to admit this excellent movie has shifted my perception on a death penalty. Outstanding performances of both leading actors. Sean Penn's acting may convince you to be on his side. Tim Robins did a brilliant job on this one. I gotta read the book now!

It is one of the type. A nun helped a murder. Do you understood her or can you stood by her side. What is a merce? Who is a son of god? Got to watch this movies. Susan Saranoon and Sean Penn’s Performance are bravi!

Awesome bunch of actress' & actors.
This was a very true & moving story... I believe the American justice system is very broken & vengeful, not rehabilatating as it should be. This movie outlines a lot of the injustices & issues around death row & lethal injection (its not a 'nice' way to go, yes there is worse, but its not pain free).
More detail into the crime would have made it more interesting for me personally but that was not the point of this movie.

Waste of time , boring

Sad story where everyone loses and no one wins. Penn and Sarandon were excellent.

This is a 1995 American crime drama directed by Tim Robbins, who adapted the screenplay from the non-fiction book of the same name written by Sister Helen Prejean, who established a special relationship with Matthew Poncelet (played by Sean Penn), a prisoner on death row in Louisiana.
Susan Sarandon plays as Sister Helen Prejean.
Superb is the acting of both Sarandon and Penn.
The lethal injection scene is quite realistic.
It would be more interesting if the director looked into the motive and psychological background of Poncelet.
It is quite moving when the murdered boy's father attends the ceremony and begins to pray with Sister Helen.

Atty. Hilton Barber (at Matthew Poncelet's appeals hearing): "The death penalty. It's nothin' new; it's been with us for centuries. We've buried people alive; lopped off their heads with an axe; burned them alive at a public square... gruesome spectacles. In this century, we kept searchin' for more and more *humane* ways... of killin' people that we didn't like. We've shot 'em with firing squads; suffocated 'em, in the gas chamber. But now... Now we have developed a device that is the most humane of all. Lethal injection." (cont'd)

Atty. Hilton Barber (at Matthew Poncelet's appeals hearing) (cont'd) "We strap the guy up. We anesthetize him with shot number one; then we give him shot number two, and that implodes his lungs, and shot number three stops... his heart. We put 'em to death just like an old horse. His face just, goes to sleep, while, inside, his organs are going through armageddon. The muscles of his face would twist, and contort, and pull, but you see, shot number one relaxes all those muscles so we don't have to see any horror show... We don't have to taste the blood of revenge on our lips, while this, human being's organs writhe, and twist, and contort... We just sit there, quietly. Nod our heads, and say: 'Justice has been done.' "
