A Guy lives in Dublin. He is a guitarist/singer-songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad's Hoover repair shop by day. By night, he sings and plays for money on the Dublin streets. A Girl from Czechoslovakia loves to play the piano when she gets a chance. During the day she does odd jobs. At night she takes care of her mom and her daughter. Guy meets Girl, and they get to know each other. Girl helps Guy put together a demo disc so he can take it to London in hope of landing a music contract. At the same time, the Guy and the Girl work through their past loves, and reveal their budding love for one another, through their songs.

Not our kind of music.

This was not my favorite DVD. If you want to watch a concert without very much dialogue or story, you will be happy with this movie. If you want a real story, you will be disappointed. It is 90% music and 10% dialogue. The pace is very slow. The characters have no depth. The story is very shallow. It is about two musicians that meet on the street. Both are healing from a love relationship with a significant other that ended recently. Their music friendship leads to a CD recording at the studio. In the end, they both end up with the person they broke up with. I saw this show as a live theatre. As a live show, it is great!

I wanted so much to like this movie. It has so many of the elements that normally make me like a film. It's a non-action movie (that's good). It's about regular people. He is a struggling musician. While playing on the street (which is his usual gig), he meets a young woman. She likes his music, and, as luck would have it, she plays piano. They beautifully play the song "Falling Slowly" together - a highlight of the film. However, on the whole, the film fell flat for me. It never really amounted to anything.

a recording session in search of a movie, engaging characters brought together, more or less, by their love of music and their however divergent circumstances - Irish, I thought, Fleetwood Mac wannabes on the upstart

I guess I like musicals, romance stories AND guys with ginger beards - huh, who knew?! Would also like to see the story of this friendship, but from "girl'" 's pov. ..with a little back story, maybe.

If you want to know how two people act when they put friendship and each other first, watch this movie! Excellent soundtrack.

Once is a unique experience. You kinda get the sense that you're watching real life. And as a street musician myself this was a nice treat - not to mention the original tunes featured in the movie are great!

I watched this after seeing the musical. I didn't know until watching that this is a home made movie. Obviously shot with an SLR home camera. Most is shot hand held with no consideration or adjustment for lighting. Street scenes were shot with people standing around watching.
Acting and singing isn't as professional as the camera work. I wouldn't have finished watch the film if I didn't want to compare it to the musical.

Overall very poor.

Great film, with great music!

My favourite song: "When Your Mind's Made Up"

"Oh, broken-hearted Hoover fixer sucker guy
Oh, broken-hearted Hoover fixer sucker, sucker guy
One day I'll go there and win her once again
But until then I'm just a sucker of a guy"

From Once--"Falling Slowly"--Duet (Lyrics)

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

[Chorus Repeats]
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice

You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing it loud
