The second Shetland novel. Beautiful, but very sad.
Great follow-up to first of series.
Evocative setting. The past, no matter how well hidden, Will eventually catch up.
You'd not want to read this one without reading the first in the series. The Shetlands make an interesting setting.
The second installment in this entertaining mystery series set in the Shetland Islands. The exotic locale, with its quirky customs and dialect, is a bonus; but aside from that, the writing is solid and compelling.
unbelieveable murderer and unsatisfying storyline
During the "simmer dim" when the sun never goes down in Shetland, Jimmy Perez investigates the deaths of two people in the far north of the island. One is an unknown man and the other the most famous Shetlander in the world. I loved this book. I liked it better than the first one (Raven Black) as the main character was a bit more developed and it just had a different feel. Maybe the simmer dim affected me too as Raven Black took place in the winter.
Another atmospheric, richly layered murder mystery in this series. It's almost Faulkner-like by telling a story set in the present that is profoundly influenced by the past. These mysteries are not gory or sensational. Instead, they are character driven & full of secrets to keep you guessing who the murder could be till the end. As a side note, to whoever is also reading these and feels the need to pencil in "corrections" in grammar & word usage, perhaps you could write your own manuscript & edit to your little heart's content. Some of us would prefer to read the book as the real author intended it to be read.
A little of a 'cozy' mystery: the protagonist is shy and sweet, there's a good woman who could use a good man in her life, and every victim is murdered without blood-shed or gore. Also, the motive is a result of who loved who and who broke who's heart.
That said, it's modern enough to move along at a goodly pace. I liked this book, as well as the previous in this series.
