"Based on the life of the author's mother, a teacher in poverty-stricken Tennessee, Christy captured the hearts of millions and became a popular CBS television series.

The train taking nineteen-year-old teacher Christy Huddleston from North Carolina to the Smoky Mountain community of Cutter Gap might as well be transporting her to another world. Trapped by poverty, superstitions, and traditions, some there see Christy and her one-room school as a threat to their way of life. Yearning to make a difference, will Christy's determination and devotion be enough?"

This was a deeply moving novel about a young woman, Christy, who goes to teach in the Great Smoky Mountains at the turn of the century. As she struggles to understand the highlanders and their ways, she learns about God, life, and love. I was afraid the story would be cloyingly sweet or somehow Pollyanna-ish, but it manages to be compassionate and understanding while still raising the difficult questions we all ask at some point or another.

This is such a touching and inspirational book. Christy survives so many hardships and each conflict keeps you captivated. The characters are all given such a personality that they feel real. Catherine Marshall is an excellent author.
