I really didn't like this movie as much as I wanted to and it took me a few viewings to get into it, but one scene in particular really touched my heart. James Franco did a wonderful job as Oz in this and it was like the role was written just for him. A lot of the film had some special effects that were pretty intense so parents might want to watch this first before letting their kids watch it.

Oz the great and powerful is a great movie to watch because the plot and the whole scenes and the places used in the movie are wonderful and eye catching. Oscar Diggs (James Franco) travels to the land of Oz and explores the fascinating place, and he encounters three witches Theodora, Evanora, and Glinda, and he has to make a decision about who is the wicked witch and who is the nice witch because they all believe that Oscar is not the great wizard that the land of Oz needs. I rate this movie a 4.5 out of 5 because of the great scenery that is shown in the movie and all of the actors did a great job in the making of the movie. @BirdieBooks of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I tended to adore this movie more than most. Being from Kansas I got subtle ironies. The FX was incredibly up to date while remaining in the oeuvre of Baum's original works and movie. Excellent.

Interesting story establishing the history of the typical 'Wizard of Oz'. Obviously it could have been better, but it was still good.

The effects were okay, but the story dragged and the characters were not engaging.

This successfully reproduces some aspects of L. Frank Baum's books and the original film, but it falls short in some ways: Glinda is too human for someone who goes on to be a clone of the good fairy from Pinocchio, Theodora's transformation is not credible and there's no explanation for flying baboons vs monkeys. A major element of the original film is the possibility that the whole thing is just in Dorothy's head. Having another person experience Oz as well ruins that though, even if Glinda is Annie's doppelganger, unless Oscar Diggs has just imagined it in this film too and then influenced Dorothy's psychosis later in the 1939 film as Professor Marvel / the Wizard. If Annie marries John Gale after a relationship with Oscar in this film, is she the future mother of Dorothy Gale (raised by Aunt Em) and is it possible that Oscar himself might be the biological father? I suppose I'm over-thinking it. This film was better than reviews made it out to be.

I watched this when it came out and I must say, it was scary. the scene where the girl ate the apple was very creepy. I don't think that anyone under 10 should watch this.

This wonderful adventure serves as a prequel to the Wizard of Oz by chronicling how the original Wizard, named Oscar Diggs, first made it to Oz and his rise to power. All comparisons to the original aside, Sam Raimi has done an incredible job of creating a visual feast for your eyes, as the vibrant colors, beautifully designed creatures, and cinematography are top notch. Although I wish the three witches were given more screen time for character development and growth, Oz The Great and Powerful captured the same feelings that I had while reading the book series as a kid. I highly recommended it if you are looking for a fun, family friendly, film.

Oz: Look, I know I'm not the wizard that you expected. But I might just be the wizard that you need.

Glinda: You said you were just a con man.

Oz: Precisely!

Glinda: Nothing but a trickster?

Oz: Yes!

Glinda: A terrible cheat!

Oz: The best there is.

Glinda: A carnival magician's going to put on a show.

Oz: I'll put on the show of a lifetime! The likes of which the land of Oz has never seen! Magic! Mystery! Prestidigitation! It'll be my greatest trick yet.

Glinda: For the record, I knew you had it in you all along.
Oz: Greatness?
Glinda: No. Better than that. Goodness.
--------
Oz: [whispers to Glinda] I might not actually be a wizard...
Glinda: Yes, but they don't know that.
------------
Oz: You can have a nice pile of bananas!

Finley: Oh, I see, because I'm a monkey I must love bananas!

Oz: You don't love bananas?

Finley: Of course I love bananas, I'm a monkey! Don't be ridiculous!
