A light, but robust read.

This book is a treasure. Written in what I would call "storyteller" style, the tale is told by Samuel Craddock, a solid and unassuming resident of Jarrett Creek who used to be police chief in this small town. Craddock and his late wife appreciated and collected art, and that interest is at the core of this story. It is populated by ordinary people who do ordinary things, for the most part, but a few of them have secrets that raise the ante of intrigue as Samuel whittles away at the mystery of the murder of a lifelong friend. It was very refreshing to find a story told without rampant profanity, gratuitous violence, or graphic sex. If this book was available on CD, you could listen to it with the kids in the car and not encounter anything you wish they hadn't heard. Within hours of finishing this book, I checked the inventories of nearby libraries and scored two more titles. I look forward to reading these and more.

A wonderful new talent contributes to the mystery genre. Well rounded, engaging characters, excellent plotting and a tremendous sense of place combine to leave the reader entirely satisfied. Fortunately, this is the first book in a series. The second book has now been published and there is at least one more to come.
