This preteen novel has you hooked from the first page when we meet 14 year-old Nick, his younger brother Danny, and their once-great baseball pitcher dad. They’re moving into an old house left to them by an aged aunt in Colorado after experiencing a heartbreaking house fire that took the life of the boys’ mom. The story quickly gets going when Nick decides to claim the attic as his space and clears out all the old junk stored there. Things get weird when his rained-out garage sale attracts neighbours like flies as they rush to buy items – an old camera, reel-to-reel tape recorder, ancient toaster, an old dome hair dryer (you get the idea) – each paying way more than Nick is asking. As Nick makes friends he also discovers the objects belonged to Nikola Tesla who created them with amazing powers. But there are strange men with unusual abilities who badly want to get their hands on Tesla’s trove of devices at any price. Following Nick and his friends fight to get the items back and uncover Tesla’s secrets before their ominous hunters stop them makes this story a great read. The characters are interesting, the mystery exciting and best of all, this is the first book in a trilogy. I highly recommend it. (Submitted by Pippa)
