On the surface, this novel is a simple tale of a young man who encounters a shape-shifting devil, an early manifestation of a doppelganger, and the various misadventures that follow. This novel was perhaps the first post modern novel; it employs clustered narratives, self-reflexive point-of-view, unreliable narrators, and an unsympathetic-protagonist. This is indeed a landmark novel.

A very strange 19th century tale of madness, religious fanaticism, and murder. Presented as the memoirs of the title sinner, this feels like the Gothic novel pushed to its extremes and a precursor to the 20th century obsession with serial killers. The language takes a little time to get used to, but this is a highly strange and singular book. Hogg was Scottish and friends with Walter Scott. You should also check out "Vathek" and "Caleb Williams."
