Excellent novel, Julie Klassen excels at penning stories that have intrigue, mystery, and depth. If you are the "quicky" type of reader that lacks patience and does not care to savor a novel, then this story is just not for you. At points during the novel I really wanted to know what the fuss was bout in this mysterious house. What was the treasure and why was so many parties concerned?? but there is no use skipping pages! One is just going to have to wait it out to find out the secrets of Pembrooke park.
I adore sweet, convincing romances that don't fast-forward to intimacy but display the characters growing together and deliberately making a choice to be together. I found the romance in this novel just right.

The length and complexity of the story allowed for multiple characters and relationships. I only wish the author included a character legend at the beginning of the book so that readers like myself could refer to them easily. Especially since the book included people posing as 'persons they were not". Near the end of the book I found that I forgot who "Mr. Morris" is and irritated me tremendously. I considered going back to find out, but the book is to lengthy for that.

While I think all the characters introduced were very interesting and crucial, the secondary romances, and all that back and forth, formalities and idle conversations were too much for me at times.

Pretty good, but not my favorite from this author. It was a bit hard to get into, and wound up kind of confusing towards the end.

I just wish that somewhere on the book there had been a notice that this story has a strong Christian theme underlying the story.

Wow! Can I give it more than 5 stars? This book is a masterful regency era romance such as Julie Klassen is already known for, but the suspense and thrills are definitely up a notch. It's edgier and somewhat more exciting than her previous works, although thankfully not any less clean in the romance department. As usual, her characters are wonderfully complex and her gorgeous settings are described in such detail that you feel you are there but in just a few words so that the descriptions don't undermine the story at all.

I love how Ms. Klassen's stories are all so different. It never feels like you know what's coming because of the 'formula' she may have used for the last three books. While I was reading this one I was concerned about how some aspects might play out in the end, but it was surprising but well done. There was so much going on but it was wrapped up exactly right in the end. Do I recommend this book? You bet!
