Newbery Award-winning author Matt de la Peña's The Living is "a rare thing: a plot-driven YA with characters worthy of a John Green novel." [Entertainment Weekly, A-] Shy takes the summer job to make some money. A few months on a luxury cruise liner--how bad can it be? Bikinis, free food, maybe even a girl or two . . . every cruise has a fresh crop of passengers, after all. He'll rake in the tips and be able to help his mom and sister out with the bills. But then, an earthquake more massive than any ever recorded hits California and Shy's life is changed forever. The earthquake is only the beginning. Twenty-four hours and a catastrophic chain of events later, Shy is lost at sea, fighting to survive--and stuck with her. She's blond and she's rich, and never in her life would she have dreamed she'd be adrift in the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by death and completely dependent on a guy like Shy. And Shy hasn't...

Similar to the comments of the other posts, I too felt that the "perfect storm" of catastrophic events required a stretch for the imagination. However fantastical the situation and setting may be, it did not stop me from reading this compelling fast-paced novel. I really liked the pace and the character development in "The Living" and was amused by its sense of humor. The writer integrates a number of very critical issues affecting our communities today; the need for universal and quality healthcare for all people and economic and educational opportunities for the underclass. De la Pena crafts a very good read for the young adult reader in particular, however, the story gravitates once too many times into the overtly heterosexual escapades of our main character, Shy, who does not seem too bashful about his desires. Nothing wrong with desires but it is presented too many times and a constant reminder of the character's sexual needs. Aside from that minor detail which can alienate LGBT fans, such as myself, of De la Pena, its a great book and I greatly anticipated its sequel, "The Hunted".

It's an awesome and reminds me of the Life of Pi, only much more better.

"With a cushy job on a cruise ship, Shy Espinoza's summer is looking good. Not only is he spending time with his beautiful crush, Carmen, he's also earning money to help his nephew get treatment for Romero Disease, the pandemic that's raging through California. But then a devastating tsunami smashes the ship, and Shy's everyday concerns are replaced by the fierce desire to survive. Authentic characters anchor the breathtaking action in this provocative and utterly gripping thriller, the first in a planned two-book series. For another gritty, post-apocalyptic read, try The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer."
