Thomas Keating: A Rising Tide of Silence is a reflective portrait of Father Thomas Keating, one of today's most influential spiritual leaders. Interweaving historical footage, interviews, and extensive conversations with Father Thomas, the film traces his spiritual journey from an affluent New York City childhood, to an austere Trappist monastic life, to his rise through the Order, and his election as Abbot of St. Joseph's Abby in Spencer, Massachusetts in 1961.

I only knew he was a Catholic clergyman, and an author of widely available books on practicing faith. In the end, he included himself among leaders of other faiths and perhaps did much to advance the practice of centering prayer which he frankly acknowledged had much in common with meditation. In the course of its duration we learn not merely facts of his life but seem persuaded that we know the man; perhaps even in some sense that he knows us. One fellow monk, who seems the genuine article, makes just that assessment of Keating. I have rated this five stars; nothing about the production challenges that. More positively, edification is rare enough, here it is combined with uplifting.
