A repackaged edition of the revered author’s spiritual memoir, in which he recounts the story of his divine journey and eventual conversion to Christianity.

C. S. Lewis—the great British writer, scholar, lay theologian, broadcaster, Christian apologist, and bestselling author of Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Chronicles of Narnia, and many other beloved classics—takes readers on a spiritual journey through his early life and eventual embrace of the Christian faith. Lewis begins with his childhood in Belfast, surveys his boarding school years and his youthful atheism in England, reflects on his experience in World War I, and ends at Oxford, where he became "the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England." As he recounts his lifelong search for joy, Lewis demonstrates its role in guiding him to find God.

The title is a reference to Lewis' wife Joy Davidman. She was married to author William Lindsay Gresham, and told him she was divorcing him, taking their kids to England, and marrying C.S. Lewis. He was very surprised when she did exactly that. The story of her life with Lewis is dramatized in "Shadowlands."

'Surprised by Joy' contains Lewis' journey from childhood to becoming a Christian. The journey is fraught with twists and turns, and yet paints an all-too-real picture of how some people perceive the world. In fact, at different points, the world is perceived differently, each as strange and new to Lewis as the last.

Lewis does a grand job of using words to touch the hearts of his readers. What each person may learn from the story will differ from reader to reader, but I would be surprised if anybody came away from this book with nothing. Throughout the whole book, the call of Joy, which in itself is a call to God, is strewn throughout.

This is a wonderful book that I enjoyed reading and learned from. Lewis said, "I sometimes wonder whether all pleasures are not substitutes for Joy." These are wise words. For God made everything to point back to Himself, where Joy lives and breathes. If you are struggling in your Christian journey, or your life journey, you will be able to pull some wisdom from 'Surprised by Joy.'
